Year 4

Welcome to Year 4!
We are so excited to welcome your child to the year group and as part of this we would also like to introduce the Year 4 team for! The staff in Year 4 are Miss Jones, Miss Sims and Mrs Southam. Mrs Mayes and Mrs Carter will also be working within Year 4, covering lessons and leading interventions. Please feel free to talk to the members of staff if you have any questions related to your child’s time in Year 4.
General Information
- Homework will be given every Friday and should be returned to school
by the following Thursday. - Book bags should be brought into school every day. Please record any
- reading your child does at home in their diaries. We aim to change books weekly but if books need changing before then, please speak to a member of staff.
- It is important to hear your child read on a regular basis, to develop
- fluency and comprehensions skills. Reading a book several times really helps with the fluency. If there are particular words they get stuck on, write them down and use them to play snap or memory games etc. Further guidance to help you in supporting your child’s reading will be provided throughout the term.
- The classroom doors will be open at 8:35 am in the morning and the children will be greeted by a member of staff and walk straight into class. Similarly, at 3:10pm the children will leave school via the classroom door.
- Children will need to bring a named water bottle into school. No juice or fizzy drinks.
- The children will have a personal locker to keep all their belongings.
- Children will be provided with stationary, so they do not need to bring their own equipment into school.
In Year 4 we provide a balanced and broad curriculum that supports, engages and enables pupils to achieve their educational potential.
Maths Times Tables Check
Year 4 is an important year for Times Tables as the children will be expected to know all their times tables (up to 12 times) by the end of the year. The children have a maths lesson weekly that focuses on a different times table. The children will also be assessed frequently and supported with any that they are struggling with. There will be a focus on using Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) in Year 4 and the children will be encouraged to use this at home also. This is to get the children ready for the MTC in June.
All of our learning can be found on the document below which is our long term plan.
Autumn Term
We have an exciting term planned for Year 4!
For English in the Autumn term, we will continue to use ‘The Write Stuff’ and focus on persuasive letters, narratives and poetry. Our Year 4 Mathematicians will build their knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and area. The Year 4 children will also complete weekly times table lessons as well as daily practice in preparation for the times table check later in the year.
The children will have weekly opportunities to build their skills as Historians, Scientists and Geographers. In History, we will begin our learning journey by exploring the Maya civilisation and then time-travel to the Roman era which will continue moving into the Spring term also. Our Year 4 Scientists will investigate states of matter before then learning all about living things and their wonderful habitats. Finally, in Geography we will discover the water cycle and use this knowledge to explore our second unit, the journey of a river!
In RE, Year 4 will explore ‘the Trinity’ and then move onto ‘What do Hindu’s believe God is like?’. In PSHE, we will first start with a weekly unit called ‘Belonging, Ambition and Equity’ before moving on to ‘Rules and Responsibilities’ and ‘My Emotions’. We will also spend a week focusing on Anti-Bullying.
In Computing, we will begin by learning about the Internet before learning about audio editing. We will also touch on photo-editing.
For our Music units, we will first focus on ‘Rhythm’ and then complete a unit on ‘Pulse’ using a range of instruments, voice and technology.
Our PE units for Autumn are Dance and Gymnastics. We will also begin our weekly swimming lessons! We also hope to begin our dodgeball unit before the Christmas break.
We will also explore French for Modern Foreign Languages and look out how to introduce ourselves in French.
The Year 4 team are incredibly excited for this learning journey
