Year 2
Welcome to Year 2!
We are so excited to welcome your child to the year group and as part of this we would also like to introduce the Year 2 team for 2025-2026!
The staff in Year 2 are Mrs Bonas, Miss Peek and Mrs Finney. Please feel free to talk to the members of staff if you have any questions related to your child’s time in Year 2.
General Information
- Homework will be given every Friday and should be returned to school by the following Thursday.
- Book bags should be brought into school every day. Please record any reading your child does at home in their diaries. We aim to change books weekly but if books need changing before then, please speak to a member of staff.
- It is important to hear your child read on a regular basis, to develop fluency and comprehensions skills. Reading a book several times really helps with the fluency. If there are particular words they get stuck on, write them down and use them to play snap or memory games etc. Further guidance to help you in supporting your child’s reading will be provided throughout the term.
- The classroom doors will be open at 8:35 am in the morning and the children will be greeted by a member of staff and walk straight into class. Similarly, at 3:10pm the children will leave school via the classroom door.
- Children will need to bring a named water bottle into school. No juice or fizzy drinks.
- The children will have a personal locker to keep all their belongings.
- Children will be provided with stationary, so they do not need to bring their own equipment into school.
Year 2 is an exciting year as the children mark the end of their journey in KS1, before transitioning into KS2. The year is spent building on the knowledge the children have gained during their time in Early Years and Year 1 and preparing them for KS2. We are very excited to share details about what we will cover throughout the Autumn term below.
Autumn Term
This year, we are teaching all subjects weekly, rather than in blocks. This is super exciting as the children get to experience every subject, every week!
In Science, we will be looking at the use of everyday materials and animals, including humans. This will involve experimenting with a range of materials and looking at animals, their habitats and what they need to survive.
In History, we will be learning all about the gunpowder plot and why we celebrate Bonfire Night! We will also be learning about history close to him, by completing a unit all about King Richard III and King Charles III.
In our weekly Geography lessons, we will learnng about the continents and the oceans of the world, including naming them and locating them on a map. We will also begin look at what life is like in New Delhi, as part of a comparative study unit.
Our first unit of Art and DT will begin with us looking at cityscapes and creating our own cityscape of Leicester. We will then complete a unit of DT, designing and building a new chair for Baby Bear (after Goldilocks broke his!).
In RE, we have two big questions we will be exploring this term- Who is Muslim and how do they live? What does Christmas mean to Christians?
In PSHE, we will begin the year learning about our rights, rules and responsibilities. We will then explore My Emotions, learning all about our emotions and what they mean. As November hosts Anti-Bullying Week, we will also have a unit about Anti-Bullying.
Throughout the term, we will be learning all about voice and pitch through our weekly Music lessons.
In English, the children will have lots of opportunities to showcase their fantastic writing skills, by writing a variety of text types including persuasive letters, stories, poems and non-chronological reports.
In Maths, this term we will be covering place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. Gaining an understanding of place value and the four operations will allow the children to apply this learning to further units such as money, time, shape and fractions.
We will, of course, be finishing off the term with our annual Nativity performance.
We are very excited for a wonderful Autumn Term in Year 2!
